When it comes to asphalt shingles, there are a lot of colors to choose from these days. For instance, just with GAF shingles, there are six different color families for a total of 29 colors in all. In addition, Owens Corning and IKO — two other brands that Dane County homeowners love — each offer dozens of color options, as well.
When we work with homeowners, our goal is to support them (as much or as little as they need) to make sure they choose the color that’s just right for their home. Sometimes, when homeowners are looking to stay in their home for a long time, it may be fun to choose a more bold color option. On the contrary, if the homeowners are looking to sell, it might be better to choose a more timeless color, or even a trending color, which can add curb appeal and value to the home.
That all said, let’s take a look at the top national shingle colors for 2025, as well as the top colors in Wisconsin. Just for fun, we’ll also review the shingle color of the year.
Let’s jump in …
THE TOP NATIONAL SHINGLE COLORS IN 2025
For the purposes of this article, we’re keeping our focus on GAF asphalt shingles, as they’re the most popular roofing brand we carry — and they’re also America’s #1 roofing company.
For 2025, the top GAF trending shingle colors nationally are Charcoal, Weathered Wood, Pewter Gray, and Barkwood.

What’s interesting about these colors is the fact that they are timeless classics, although they are sometimes perceived as trendy. The fact that these colors complement a variety of color palettes means there’s a high probability at least one of them will look good on just about any home — no matter what the color of the siding. This versatility also comes in handy if a homeowner wants to change the color of their siding, plus all of these colors help strengthen resale value because they essentially never go out of style.
THE 2025 TOP ASPHALT ROOFING COLORS IN WISCONSIN
It’s probably no surprise that the above mentioned colors are also popular in the Dane County area, but none of them are the most popular. So, what is the most popular color of all? Hunter green.

In actuality, this is the top color throughout the northern part of the midwest, particularly with homes that have more land. Some homeowners like how this color “embraces a barn or farmhouse aesthetic,” while also delivering amazing curb appeal. According to GAF, there’s a trend where homeowners are pairing white or neutral siding with hunter green shingles, which makes the roof a focal point of the home.
MERLOT: THE SHINGLE COLOR OF THE YEAR (ACCORDING TO OWENS CORNING)
Owens Corning is another of our top performing asphalt shingle brands, and here’s what they had to say about the 2025 color of the year …
The 2025 Shingle Color of the Year, Merlot, draws inspiration from those serene moments found at the end of the day. Channeling the rich warmth and beauty experienced as the sun dips closer to the horizon line, our design team crafted a unique palette of granules in warm gray, oaky brown and spiced sienna with deep red and purple undertones. The result is a complex arrangement that celebrates time-honored tradition with 21st century appeal.
