Here’s how it works …
A GAF FORTIFIED Roof adds an additional layer of strength to GAF’s already robust, durable asphalt roofing systems. One of the benefits of a FORTIFIED roof is the fact that it helps to further protect against severe Wisconsin weather. Plus, FORTIFIED roofing may be eligible for insurance discounts (check with your homeowner’s insurance agent to verify).
Since we’re already GAF Master Elite asphalt roofing installers, this certification helps us bring even more value, quality, durability and dependability to our roofing installations.
WHAT IS A FORTIFIED ROOF
In short, it is a designation that has been developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) that focuses on improving roof strength. The FORTIFIED program has partnered with GAF — America’s leading asphalt roofing company — to offer “a voluntary construction and re-roofing program designed to help protect homes against severe weather. In line with our commitment to help protect your home, GAF has established an alliance with IBHS.” Through their partnership, IBHS and GAF are working to help make FORTIFIED Roofs more accessible to homeowners nationwide.
THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS
Not just any roofing contractor can be a FORTIFIED Certified Service Provider for GAF Roofing. There’s a strict certification process in place that includes the following:
- A roofing contractor must use products that meet or exceed specific standards, and install the roof in accordance with the applicable FORTIFIED™ Standard and manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- A Certified FORTIFIED Evaluator must then independently verify that all requirements are satisfied before IBHS will award a 5-year designation. A designation is valid for 5 years and an inspection is required to renew it.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF A GAF FORTIFIED ROOF
- Stronger edges help to reduce shingle blowoffs caused when wind gets underneath roof edges.
- Improved attachment is accomplished with the use of specific ring-shank nails that need to be installed in a particular pattern.
- A stronger roof vent (hurricane standard only) that must be tested in accordance with TAS 100 (A). This is true for both ridge and off-ridge roof vents.
- Impact-resistant shingles (optional hail supplement only) in hail-prone areas like Wisconsin. Homeowners that choose the Hail Supplement receive shingles that have a score of Good or Excellent on the IBHS Hail Impact Ratings.
